Emily Armstrong, New Linkin Park Singer, Responds to Backlash Over Danny Masterson Support

Linkin Park’s new vocalist, Emily Armstrong, is facing backlash after supporting convicted rapist Danny Masterson. Masterson was sentenced in May 2023 for the rape of two women in 2003. Armstrong, who replaced the late Chester Bennington, addressed the controversy, claiming she misjudged the situation and is now working to clear her name.

Fans were initially thrilled by the announcement of Armstrong joining the band, but that excitement turned to outrage when her connections to both the Church of Scientology and Masterson came to light. Many fans expressed anger, alleging that Armstrong’s association with Masterson disrespects the memory of Bennington, who was a survivor of childhood abuse. Bennington tragically died by suicide in 2017.

In response to the uproar, Armstrong took to Instagram to explain her side of the story. “Hi, I’m Emily. I’m new to so many of you, and I wanted to clear the air about something that happened a while back,” she wrote. She explained that she had supported Masterson at an early court hearing, considering him a friend at the time, but soon realized her mistake as the case progressed.

“I always try to see the good in people, and I misjudged him. I have never spoken with him since. Unimaginable details emerged, and he was later found guilty,” Armstrong clarified. “To say it as clearly as possible: I do not condone abuse or violence against women, and I empathize with the victims of these crimes.”

Amidst the controversy, Linkin Park has pushed forward, announcing a new album, single, and world tour. The band’s updated lineup includes original members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, and Joe Hahn, alongside Armstrong and new drummer Colin Brittain. Fans remain divided as they process both the excitement of new music and the ongoing concerns surrounding Armstrong’s past actions.
